Q. What steps can I take to prevent identity
theft?
A. In addition to safeguarding your check book,
savings pass book, credit cards, and driver's license or other means
of identification:
Never give your social security number or
account numbers to anyone over the phone unless you initiated the
call and know who you are talking to.
Review all of your account and credit card
statements as soon as you receive them. If a statement contains
any suspicious transaction, investigate the matter immediately.
Shred or tear up receipts, old account statements,
unused credit card offers, and any other papers containing your
social security number or account numbers before throwing them away.
Order copies of your credit report periodically
and review your information for accuracy. You can obtain a copy
of your credit report for a small fee from a credit bureau. The
three major credit bureaus are: Equifax (800-685-1111 or www.equifax.com);
Experian (888-397-3742 or www.experian.com/experian_us.html);
and TransUnion (800-916-8800 or
www.transunion.com).
Keep your PINs and computer passwords confidential
and change them often. Maintain your PINs and passwords in a safe
place rather than carrying them with you.
Drop out-going mail in a secure United States
Postal Service collection box, rather than placing it in your home
mail box.
When ordering on-line, use a secure server.
